EES & ETIAS: the new EU border rules
Two new systems are changing how travellers cross into Europe. Here's what each one is, when it applies, and what you need to do.
Do I need ETIAS yet?
Not right now. ETIAS is expected to launch towards the end of 2026 — no exact date is confirmed. Until then you don't need it. EES is already live (since April 2026), so expect biometric checks at the border instead of a passport stamp.
EES — the Entry/Exit System (live now)
EES is an automated border system used across the Schengen area. Instead of stamping your passport, it records your fingerprints and a facial scan with your entry and exit. There is nothing to apply for — it happens at the border, and it automatically tracks your 90-day Schengen allowance. Schengen 90/180 calculator →
ETIAS — travel authorisation (expected late 2026)
ETIAS is a pre-travel authorisation for visa-exempt visitors. When it starts you'll apply online before you travel. It is expected to cost €20 (free for under-18s and over-70s), last 3 years, and cover multiple trips. You'll need it in addition to a valid passport. Passport validity checker →
